If you don't want to get your system messed up then use the following program.
It's completely free of charge!
The new version does convert any BootScreens to WinXP SP2 compatible ones. You can download old SP1 BootScreens and use them or use the new SP2 BootScreens just as you like.
Hope that helps!
Get it here:

How did you install the bootscreen? Did you do it manually or did you use a program? If so, what program did you use? Try to provide some detail if you want help.

i did it manually, by replacing the ntoskrn1.exe file in c:/windows/system32. i cant boot up anything now, a blue screen pops up saying "session5_inisialization_failed"
it tells me to restart in safe mode but i get the same thing that way.

Ah, what you can try it boot off your XP cd and go into the recovery console and replace the bad bootscreen with the original.
If you only have a 'Recovery CD', like comes with Dell and other big-box names, you're options are limited. Do you have an OEM or retail XP cdrom you can boot from?

Yeah I figured. I hate it when computer companies do that. That CD is only good to you if you want to erase your hard drive and re-image it with what's on the recovery CD. If you can get a retail or OEM XP cd, maybe borrow one from a friend, then you can fix it.

Highly recommend buying and installing GoBack on your computer. It has been a lifesaver for me.

how safe is the free boot screen tool you recommend here? i've been using styleXP and it works fine for all but the boot screen.. instead of just jumping to my chosen one i have to choose an operating system.. which sorta defeats the purpose of having a custom bootscreen i think.. if i wanted to choose to see it i could haev a bmp open on startup ;p .. anyways. if anyone hasd an idea on how to get around this in StyleXP or knows how well it works with the tool recommended.. drop a few lines.

Ihave a hard time trusting symantec after having replaced my avast! with norton internet security for a while.. it's liek they willfully let viruses through.. so you'd buy more software from them to remove it ;p

Well I've never had any trouble with it and never had any complaints. Because it doesn't touch your kernel file and only adds a new line to your boot.ini file, it's not possible for it to cause problems.
If you like StyleXP but don't like how you have to manually select the alternate kernal at the boot menu, just change the default boot menu choice. It's easy. Just go to Control-Panel --> System --> Advanced (tab) --> Startup and Recovery (Settings button). Then select which OS choice you want to change to the default and click Apply. Done! Reboot and it will boot your custom OS choice from StyleXP (with your custom bootscreen).
